One of the most important decisions you’ll make when playing disc golf is what discs to buy. While this might seem overwhelming at first with all the options out there, we’ve got you covered with this complete guide to the top disc golf brands today.
Innova
Innova has been the market leader in disc golf ever since their inception in 1983. They have a huge variety of discs and plastics and a lineup of sponsored pros to back up their performance. You really can’t go wrong with Innova as they’ve been making high quality discs for the second longest of any disc golf brand.
Pro Team
While several top pros like Paul McBeth and James Conrad have left Innova for lucrative contracts with smaller competitors, Innova still has an impressive pro roster, with household names such as Gregg Barsby, Philo Brathwaite, Garrett Gurthie, Calvin Heimburg, Juliana Korver, and Nate Sexton all throwing Innova discs.
Top Discs
Innova has tons of great discs to choose from. Some of their most popular discs include the Destroyer (distance driver), Wraith (distance driver), Aviar (putter), Firebird (fairway driver), Leopard (fairway driver), Mako3 (midrange) and Roc3 (midrange).
Discraft
Founded in 1979 by pro disc golf players Jim Kenner and
Gail McColl, Discraft has paved the way in frisbee sports including Disc Golf, Freestyle, and Ultimate Frisbee. Discraft has a great selection of discs to choose from and has been making waves in the pro scene with some big names signing on to Team Discraft.
Pro Team
In 2018, Paul McBeth, arguably the greatest disc golf player of all time, left Innova to sign a 10 year, 10 million dollar contract with Discraft. Soon after in 2019, Discraft signed Paige Pierce, the world’s top rated female player, to a 3 year sponsorship deal. Then in early 2020, Ultimate player/YouTuber turned disc golfer Brodie Smith signed with Disc Craft as well. Needless to say, these signings have brought huge attention to Discraft’s discs and grown their brand significantly in the last several years.
Top Discs
Disccraft’s most popular discs include the Buzzz (midrange), Luna (putter), Zone (putter), Undertaker (distance driver), Nuke (distance driver), and Comet (midrange). Since its introduction in 2003, the Buzzz is the best selling disc of all time for its ease of use and consistent flight path.
Trilogy Discs (Dynamic Discs, Latitude 64°, Westside Discs)
Dynamic Discs started in 2005 as an online disc golf retailer and then began manufacturing their own discs in 2012 after partnering with Latitude 64° and Westside Discs, Swedish and Finnish manufacturers respectively. After their partnership, fans commonly referred to the companies as “Trilogy Discs.”
Pro Team
Each brand has a few standout names including 2x World Champion Ricky Wysocki (Dynamic Discs), Emerson Keith (Latitude 64°), and Matthew Orum (Westside Discs) but not quite the star power of other brands.
Top Discs
Dynamic Discs’ putters are their most popular discs with the Judge, Deputy, and Warden leading the charge. Latitude 64° offers popular fairway drivers in the River and the Explorer and Westside Discs’s Harp and Maiden are their best selling putters.
Discmania
Although one of the older disc golf brands (founded in 2006), Discmania has always seemed to take a backseat to bigger competitors like Innova and Discraft. Two extremely popular pro disc golfers and YouTubers, Eagle McMahon and Simon Lizotte, began moving them to the forefront in recent years with their incredible trick shots and raw throwing ability.
Pro Team
Discmania has a talented up and coming pro team, but took a significant hit when Simon Lizotte signed with MVP back in January. Eagle McMahon is considered one of the most talented throwers in history, but has suffered from injuries the past few years that have kept him out of the title hunt. It remains to be seen if Discmania can sign another big name in the future.
Top Discs
Used both for putting and driving, the Discmania P2 is their best seller since it’s introduction in 2007. Other popular Discmania discs include the DDX (distance driver), MD3 (midrange), PD (distance driver), and FD (fairway driver). As you can see, Discmania doesn’t have the most interesting names in the crowd.
Prodigy Disc
Started in 2013 by 2 pro disc golfers, Prodigy has carved out a unique space in the market with their consistent discs and simple naming conventions. While not the flashiest largest lineup of discs, Prodigy is a solid up-in-coming brand.
Pro Team
Prodigy took a unique approach when first starting their pro team by giving their players a say in the future of the company and being the first disc golf brand to pay their sponsored players. Some big name players have passed through Prodigy’s ranks including Ricky Wysocki, 5x female world champion Paige Pierce, Nikko Locastro, and Will Schusterick. While they have lost some star power in recent years to other brands, they still have a talented team of Kevin Jones, Schusterick, Thomas Gilbert, and more.
Top Discs
Prodigy has yet to release a truly renowned disc, but their PA-3 (putter) and D2 (distance driver) are still very popular among players.
MVP Disc Sports
Founded in 2010, MVP Disc Sports is a newcomer to the game that has been making waves with their GYRO™ Overmold Technology. MVP claims the heavier outer rim of their discs gives them longer, straighter, and more consistent flight paths then competitors. In 2014, MVP launched Axiom Discs as a sister company to focus on more flashy colors and aesthetically pleasing discs while still utilizing the GYRO™ overmold. .
Pro Team
Up until 2021, there was nothing to write home about for MVP’s pro team. They were viewed as a cool, but small brand with no real contenders. That all changed after James Conrad signed with MVP in 2021 and he won the 2021 PDGA World Championship his first year with the team. On the last hole of the tournament, down by one stroke to 5x world champion Paul McBeth, Conrad made arguably the greatest shot in disc golf history, making a 247 foot blind shot to force a playoff for the title. Conrad then beat Mcbeth in the playoff and won his first ever World Title. This event put MVP on the map in the pro scene, despite not having any other top contenders.
In January of 2023, Simon Lizotte announced he was joining MVP, adding more star power to their ranks.
Top Discs
MVP has a good and growing lineup of discs, with their fairway and distance drivers being their most popular frisbees. The MVP Volt (fairway driver), Tesla (distance driver), Wave (distance driver), and Reactor (midrange) are popular choices. Axiom’s Envy is my personal favorite approach disc of all time, and fun fact, was used by James Conrad in his iconic 247 foot World’s shot.
Which Brand Should You Choose?
With all these options, it can be difficult knowing what discs to buy. When starting out, I recommend buying used discs from a good variety of manufacturers so you get a feel for what you like. Remember, unless you’re sponsored by a brand you don’t have to throw only their discs. Each brand has their strengths and weaknesses and throwing a mixed bag can allow you to throw the discs that are right for you.
All of the brands on this list have great options, so get out there and start throwing some plastic!
