Ready to learn which discs will be the easiest to pick up as a beginner? These are our picks here at Remix disc golf that helped us when we were just starting our disc golf journey. Stay tuned!
Best Beginner Drivers
Disc golf drivers can often be tricky for beginners as it’s easy to choose a disc that requires too much speed for an armature or is too over stable. These picks will set you in the right direction though so buckle up! Also, make sure to check out our guide to disc golf numbers and what they mean in case you have any questions about the stats for the discs we picked.
Latitude 64 River (Speed: 7, Glide: 7, Turn: -1, Fade: 1)
With a phenomenal glide and gentle fade, the Latitude 64 River is one of the best flying discs around for beginners. The River let’s beginners get the most distance they can with less arm speed which is why its our top pick for a beginner driver.
Innova Leopard3 (Speed: 7, Glide: 5, Turn: -2, Fade: 1)
The Innova Leopard3 was one of my favorite discs as a new disc golfer and continues to have a place in my bag for medium distance, straight shots. With a low enough speed to allow beginners to get the most out of it and a very forgiving fade, the Leopard3 is my top driver pick for someone just picking up disc golf for the first time.
Innova Valkyrie (Speed: 9, Glide: 4, Turn: -2, Fade: 2)
The Valkyrie is a great disc for a beginner that is starting to increase his or her throwing speed and wants a disc to reach greater distances. A Star or GStar Valkyrie (types of plastic) are much more understable while a Champion Valkyrie will be more stable and likely not as good for beginners.
Best Beginner Midranges
Mid range discs will be your best friend as a beginner disc golfer. They typically don’t require as much power to fly well and have good glide to get the most out of your throws. Here are our top choices for beginners.
Discraft Buzz (Speed: 5, Glide: 4, Turn: -2, Fade: 1)
Discraft’s Buzzz midrange is one of the best-selling discs of all time, and for good reason. Slightly understable with a very light fade at the end, the Buzzz flys well out of almost anyone’s hands.
MVP Tangent (Speed: 4, Glide: 4, Turn: -0.5, Fade: 0.5)
Another solid beginner midrange is the MVP Tangent. This disc is comfortable to throw and very accurate even for new players. The MVP Tangent is my #2 pick for a beginner due to it’s forgiving turn and fade, allowing neebies to throw further.
Innova Mako3 (Speed: 5, Glide: 4, Turn: 0, Fade: 0)
Can’t get much straighter than the Innova Mako3. This was one of my favorite discs as a beginner, until I lost it in a tall tree (sigh). Overall it’s a great disc that will still have a place in your bag for those straight tunnel shots even as you advance in skill.
Best Beginner Putters/Approach Discs
When learning to putt you want to make sure you have the best tools for the job. Here are our top putters for beginners.
Innova Aviar (Speed: 3, Glide: 2.5, Turn: 0, Fade: 1)
Loved by both pros and beginners alike, the Innova Aviar is the #1 best-selling putter of all time. The Aviar is an ultra straight putter with a very light fade, making it easy to use different release angles.
Gateway Wizard (Speed: 2, Glide: 3, Turn: 0, Fade: 2)
The Gateway Wizard is a great putter for those looking for a very consistent flight path. The Wizard is a bit more stable than the Aviar and feels different in the hand. Definitely check out a disc golf shop near you to see which one will be better for you.
Axiom Envy (Speed: 3, Glide: 3, Turn: 0, Fade: 2)
The Axiom Envy is a dead straight putter that excels at not only close putts, but also midrange and approach shots. The Envy is one of my favorite discs of all time for its consistent flight and moderate fade which gets me out of many jams.
