Best Permanent Disc Golf Baskets of 2023

Ken Burkholder by Ken Burkholder
Reading Time: 11 mins read

I’ve done the research and scoured the market to present you with a carefully curated selection of the absolute best permanent disc golf baskets available in 2023. Unlike portable baskets, these baskets are extremely durable and built to take abuse and weather for years to come.

So, whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting out, I’ve found an option to suit every budget and style. Get ready to elevate your disc golf game to new heights with these exceptional baskets built to withstand the test of time.

Permanent vs Temporary Disc Golf Baskets

When it comes to disc golf baskets, the choice between portable and permanent options is an important consideration. Portable baskets are fantastic for casual play and practice sessions on the go. They offer convenience and ease of setup, allowing you to enjoy disc golf wherever you please. However, if you’re looking to build a real disc golf course permanent baskets are the way to go.

The key difference between portable and permanent baskets lies in their construction. Permanent baskets are specifically designed to withstand the test of time and the elements. They are built with sturdier materials, such as galvanized steel, which ensures durability and longevity. The robust construction allows them to endure wind, rain, and even harsh climates, making them truly “all-weather” baskets. On the other hand, portable baskets are generally made with lighter materials like plastic, fabric, or thinner metal. Even a basket made out of metal won’t last more than a season if left outside 24/7.

Now, you might be wondering, “why are permanent baskets so expensive?” Well, it all goes back to that superior construction we just talked about. The heavy-duty materials used in permanent baskets, coupled with the all-weather coating, make them significantly more expensive.

Investing in a permanent basket is like making a long-term commitment to your disc golf game. You’re essentially purchasing a reliable and durable target that will remain a part of your course for years to come.

Permanent Disc Golf Basket: Buying Criteria

Build Quality

The single most important factor to consider when looking for a permanent disc golf basket is build quality. Buy a cheap basket and you’ll be left with a rusted, faded piece of scrap metal after a year or two.

The most important thing to consider when analyzing the durability of a basket is to look at what type of coating was used on the basket. The main types of coating you’ll find are zinc-coated, powder coated, and galvanized. Zinc and powder-coated baskets are fine if the basket won’t be outside in the rain. However, leave them outside for a few weeks and you’ll start to notice some serious rust that will only get worse over time.

Galvanized coating on the other hand will last for decades. Ever seen an ancient galvanized fence and wondered how it can last so long without rusting? it’s all in the chemistry behind how the galvanized coating works. But, I know you’re not here for chemistry, so before I bore you off the page let me just say this:

If you’re looking for a permanent disc golf basket, only buy one that is completely galvanized. It may cost more upfront, but it will last decades longer than a cheap zinc or powder-coated basket.

Accuracy

Picture this: you line up your shot, focus intensively, and release the disc with perfect form, only to watch it hit the chains, bounce off, and send your heart sinking. It’s incredibly frustrating, and I’m sure many of you can relate. That’s why I couldn’t in good conscience recommend baskets with a notorious reputation for spitting out putts that should have stuck. Let’s face it, we all need a reliable basket that won’t leave us questioning our skills or wondering if the basket itself has a mind of its own.

For me, that means sticking to baskets that are PDGA approved. That way, I know all my hard practice will translate to other baskets at other PDGA-approved courses.

Price

We all want to feel like our hard-earned money is well spent, right? I mean, if price and value were no concern, we’d all have professional course baskets dotting our yards. But let’s face it, reality often sets some budget limitations.

The good news is that there are fantastic options available in various price ranges, allowing you to find a basket that fits your budget while still delivering excellent value. Not everyone can splurge $500+ on a basket, and that’s perfectly understandable. What matters is that we make the most out of the resources we have, ensuring that every dollar spent brings us closer to the perfect disc golf experience.

By considering factors such as durability, quality, and features within your price range, you can maximize the value you receive from your chosen basket. It’s about finding that sweet spot where you feel confident in your purchase, knowing that you’ve made a smart investment that aligns with your budgetary constraints. So, whether you’re able to spend a little or a lot, rest assured that there are options out there that will give you everything you need to enjoy your disc golf game to the fullest.

Entry Level Baskets

DGA Mach 2 ($335)

Pros

The DGA Mach 2 is part of DGA’s line of disc golf baskets. Although it’s considered their “entry-level” basket, it’s still PDGA-approved. It’s also fully galvanized, which is HUGE upgrade over a lot of the other baskets you’ll find in this range.

The Mach 2 comes standard with a portable base. however, you can also choose to buy it with an in-ground conversion kit that will allow you to anchor it permanently in the ground.

Cons

The Mach 2 only has 18 chains arranged in a two-row configuration. So, it won’t have the same catching power as some of the other more expensive baskets on this list.

My Opinion

Personally, I think the DGA Mach 2 gives you the best bang for your buck as far as permanent disc golf baskets go. Sure, it may not have quite as many chains as some of the other baskets on this list, but I don’t think most people would even notice, especially if you’re just using it for a backyard course. If anything, having fewer chains will only force you to improve your putting game, which never hurt anyone.

If you’re on a budget, I highly recommend going with this fully galvanized basket over some of the other Zinc or powder-coated baskets out there. You’ll thank me later.

Who Should Buy it

Anyone looking for a solid permanent disc golf basket that will last for decades and won’t break the bank.

Mid Level Baskets

Dynamic Discs Patriot ($399)

Pros

The Dynamic Discs Patriot is a phenomenal basket that is a step up from the DGA Mach 2. Like the Mach 2, it’s fully galvanized and PDG-approved. However, with 26 chains, it has more catching power than the Mach 2. It also comes with a band around the top of the basket which makes it easier to spot from a distance.

You might have noticed that the basket and top band of the Patriot are powder coated. I can hear you asking “but I thought you said powder coating isn’t durable?” Well, that’s true if the powder coating is the only coating used. However, the powder coating on the Patriot is applied over the galvanized coating and is really just meant for aesthetics since the galvanization is what’s really protecting the metal.

Cons

I don’t really have any gripes about this basket. It’s a solid contender for the best mid-level basket.

My Opinion

I really like the look of the Dynamic Discs Patriot basket. From a durability standpoint, it’s going to be about the same as the DGA Mach 2. However, if you want a basket that’s a bit more visually appealing, it may be worth the extra spend to get a basket with the nice top band.

Who Should Buy it

Anyone looking for a basket that is a step up from the DGA Mach 2 and like’s the look and visibility of a top band.

DGA Mach 5 ($475)

Pros

The DGA Mach 5 is the big brother of the Mach 2. It’s one of the most commonly used disc golf baskets out there, and chances are good that you’ll see this basket at one of your local courses. As far as durability goes, this thing is an absolute beast. It has 24 heavy-duty chains in a unique 3-row configuration and everything from the pole to the chains is galvanized.

Cons

None really. Personally, I wish DGA would put a top band on their more expensive baskets, but it really just depends on what style you like better.

My Opinion

The DGA Mach 5 is truly a championship-level basket that is used on courses and tournaments all around the world. It may not have the bells and whistles of some of the more expensive baskets, but it does its job well.

Who Should Buy it

Anyone looking for a championship level-basket that doesn’t break the banks.

Pro Level Baskets

Innova Discatcher Pro 28 ($525)

Pros

The Innova Discatcher Pro is the standard for disc golf baskets and is installed on more courses worldwide than any other basket. The eye-catching top band on this basket is iconic and it’s the look most people think of when they hear “disc golf”.

As the name suggests, this basket has 28 total chains that do a fantastic job at catching putts. It’s also fully galvanized and, of course,; PDGA approved.

Cons

None.

My Opinion

Like many of you out there, I started playing disc golf on a local course that used this basket. It’s an iconic basket, like the Mona Lisa is to the art world, or the Les Paul is to the rock world. If you’re looking to build a championship-level disc golf course that meets industry standards this is the way to go.

Who Should Buy it

Anyone building a championship-level course and can afford to spend the money on the industry standard basket.

DGA Mach X ($575)

Pros

Ok, so maybe you’re not content with using the industry standard Innova Discatcher for your course. Maybe you’re one of those people who has to have the absolute best money can buy, eh? Enter the DGA Mach X basket. If the Innova Discatcher Pro is the Corvette of the disc golf basket world, the DAG Mach X is the Lamborghini.

The Mach X is fully galvanized and has 40 (yep, 40!) chains! That’s almost double the chains as some of the other baskets on this list. Needless to say, this thing will catch putts like a baseball glove.

Cons

As I mentioned earlier, I really wish DGA would add a top band to their top-tier baskets. Maybe it’s just me, but I like the look of the top band, and I feel like it makes the basket easier to spot.

My Opinion

Let’s be honest unless you’re building the net PDGA world championship course, you probably don’t need this basket. But then again, you’d always know in the back of your mind that you could, right?

Who Should Buy it

If you want the absolute best disc golf basket out there, buy this basket.

Best Permenant Disc Golf Baskets: Conclussion

It’s time to say goodbye to missed putts, unreliable targets, and makeshift setups. Embrace the durability, authenticity, and all-weather resilience of a permanent basket. If you’ve been using a portable basket for a while, buying a permanent basket, just might be the next step.

Find the one that aligns with your budget and resonates with your disc golf ambitions. And once you’ve made your choice, get ready to embark on a thrilling journey of birdies, aces, and unforgettable moments on the course.
