Reading Time: 17 mins read

Buying a starter set is the first step into the world of disc golf for many new players. We’ve been there and we know how confusing it can be! With all the disc golf brands out there and all the different types of discs, the choices can be completely overwhelming! However, you’ve come to the right place!

Here, we break down the top starter sets so you can get the discs you need to level up your game.

BrandWhy We Love it
Innova Starter SetThe most popular disc set of all time! Innova has been around for a long time and their starter set is incredibly beginner-friendly and affordable.
Discraft Beginner Disc Golf SetDiscraft is the longest-standing brand in disc golf and their signature starter set specifically caters to new players

Latitude 64 Disc Golf Starter Set5 discs and a mini?!!! This is a great set to get a head start on your disc collection.
Westside Discs Origio Burst Disc Golf Starter SetEasiest discs to throw for complete beginners, plus a mini.

Why did we choose these starter sets?

We chose these starter sets because they are the bests sets for new disc golf players. They are all very affordable and come with fantastic discs that are very easy for beginners to throw.

Also, they all come from well-known brands that have a wide selection of beginner, intermediate and advanced discs. So, no matter which set you go with you’ll be able to expand your bag with more discs from the same brand later on if you want to keep things consistent.

Overall, you really can’t go wrong with any beginner set on this list. Some have certain advantages over others, but they are all a fantastic first step into the world of disc golf.

Innova Starter Set

Best disc selection for beginners and our top pick!

Innova is one of the best-known brand names in disc golf. They’ve been making discs since 1983 and were the first to make discs specifically for disc golf. So, it makes sense that they have one of the largest selections of discs to choose from.

The Innova Starter set is an absolute classic and our number one pick! The 3 included discs are an excellent introduction to the Innova lineup and will cover everything on the course from the tee to the basket.

The DX plastic these discs are made from has an excellent grip that is ideal for beginners. It is not as durable (or expensive) as some of the other discs on this list, but will serve the beginner well. The Leopard driver is perfect for drives off the tee and the Shark midrange will get you the rest of the way to the basket. The Aviar putter is a classic that’s even used by Pro level players.

Once you master these discs you’ll be 100% ready to move on to some of the other top intermediate discs.

Discraft Beginner Disc Golf Set

Another great option for beginners!

Discraft is another very popular disc golf brand and their beginner disc golf set is another fantastic option if you’re just starting out. Like the Innova starter set above, these discs come in Discraft’s cheapest plastics. However, that’s not always a bad thing. Cheaper plastics often have the best grip and control which is ideal for beginners. In this case, the discs are made of Pro-D plastic which is fairly durable while keeping the price point low,

The discs included in this starter set often vary. However, they always include a solid, beginner-oriented putter, midrange, and driver. So, no matter which discs you get, you’ll be ready to hit the course.

Discraft also sells a deluxe starter set which includes an additional driver as well as a disc bag that has room for a few more discs. This is a great route to go if you have the budget to spend a bit more!

Dynamic Discs Starter Set with Sling Bag, Towel, and Mini

Best bang for your buck! Everything you need to start disc golf at a great price.

Dynamic Disc is another top name in disc golf with several recent PDGA world champions using their discs. They also have a massive and diverse product line with plenty of discs to choose from.

This set offers a ton of value, giving you 3 discs, a towel, mini, and disc golf bag for under $50! If you prefer a backpack bag instead, they have that as well for a bit more dough.

Dynamic Discs Starter Set with Backpack, Towel, and Mini

Backpack, 3 discs, mini, and towel = great deal.

Overall, both are a great pick if you want to jumpstart your disc golf game without having to source a bag, towel, and mini elsewhere.

MVP Premium Starter Set

Best for players looking for more durable discs and premium plastic.

MVP is a newer disc golf brand that is quickly making a name for itself in the disc golf community. They put an incredible amount of thought and engineering into their discs and they have some of the best-looking discs out there in our opinion.

MVP’s premium starter set is a bit more expensive than some of the others on this list. However, compared to the price of buying these discs individually, it’s actually an impressive deal! Also, as the name implies the MVP Premium Starter Set includes discs with more premium, durable plastic types than most other disc golf sets on this list.

Overall, if you can spend a bit more on the MVP quality and design, this set is a no-brainer.

Latitude 64 Disc Golf Starter Set

Best for intermediate players looking to add 5 discs to their collection.

Latitude 64 makes its discs in the coastal city of Skellefteå, near the Arctic Circle in the northeastern part of Sweden. They have one of the most advanced disc golf factories in the world which helps them put out some very high-quality and consistent discs. We also love the Retro plastic which is designed to feel great in the hand and break in quickly.

This set is geared towards those looking to quickly add more discs to their lineup. Intermediate players will likely benefit the most from the inclusion of distance drivers. If you’re a beginner, stick with throwing the putters, midranges, and fairway drivers to start out.

Westside Discs Three Disc Origio Burst Disc Golf Starter Set

Best discs for complete beginners. The included mini is a nice touch too!

Westside Discs is the new kid on the block, but they’ve quickly been making a name for themselves. They’re actually made in the same factory as Latitude 64 discs and share the same impeccable quality.

Westside discs have a reputation for being geared toward more advanced players, but their starter set is a solid option for beginners. Once you master it, you can try out some of their more advanced discs. Overall, their beginner set is a steal when compared to the price of buying the discs individually.

We think that the included Underworld, Warship, and Crown discs make a perfect combination for beginners.

There you have it!

If you’ve made it this far chances are you’re leaning towards getting your own starter set! Our advice is to go for it! The Innova Starter Set’s price and disc selection is hard to beat, but you really can’t go wrong with any of the sets on the list. They’re all made by reputable names in the disc golf industry and will serve you much better than a cheap, knock-off set.
