Buying a starter set is the first step into the world of disc golf for many new players. I’ve been there and I know how confusing it can be! With all the disc golf brands out there and all the different types of discs, the choices can be completely overwhelming! However, you’ve come to the right place!
The Innova disc golf starter set is probably the most popular set out there. It’s my top recommendation for beginners and anyone new to disc golf. Personally, I started out with this set over 10 years ago after playing a few rounds with a friend’s discs. In this in-depth review of the Innova disc golf set, you’ll learn why it’s the best set for beginners and how the discs from my original set have held up over the years.
Innova Starter Set Review: Overview
Innova is one of the best-known brands in disc golf. They’ve been making discs since 1983 and were the first to make discs specifically for disc golf. So, it makes sense that they have one of the largest selections of discs to choose from. The Innova Starter set is an absolute classic and many disc golfers have fond memories of starting out with this set.

Three great discs at an unbeatable price.
Included Discs
The 3 included discs are an excellent introduction to the Innova lineup and will cover everything on the course from the tee to the basket. They are all very beginner-friendly and provide a solid foundation as you start to develop your game.
Leopard driver | Perfect for long throws off the tee or from the fairway |
Shark midrange | Ideal for midrange shots where accuracy is important |
Aviar putter | The most popular putter in the game. I still use mine 10 years later! |
The Leopard driver
The Leopard is perfect for long throws off the tee or from the fairway. It has a low speed rating and lots of glide. So, you don’t have to throw it very hard to get some respectable distance. Personally, I was able to throw the Leopard 200″ (61 m) right out of the gate after a few afternoons of practice.
I will admit my original leopard is pretty beaten up and had some nicks and dings around the edges. But overall it’ had’s held up pretty well over the last 10 years.
The Shark midrange
The Shark is great for midrange shots and has enough accuracy to put you in a good position to make the putt. In fact, the Shark is a great option for longer-range putts too. When I was starting out, I tended to use the Leopard for drives and midrange shots, but it was always good to have the Shark there as a backup.
I don’t use my Shark as much these days. I tend to gravitate toward the Buzzz or Rhino, but I still carry my Shark every round and occasionally use it as a long-range putter.
The Aviar putter
The Aviar is a classic and even pro players use it. Innova first introduced it in 1984 and it’s arguably the most popular disc in the game. I still carry my original Aviar putter that I’ve had since the beginning it’s my go-to putter 50% of the time! In fact, it’s the disc I’ve used most consistently since I started playing 10 years ago. It just has such a great feel and throws so nicely. I just haven’t been able to find anything like it!
Innova Disc Golf Starter Set: Plastic
The DX plastic these discs are made of has an excellent grip and feel. It’s not as durable as some of the other plastic types out there, like Champion or Star plastic. However, it’s also a lot more cost-friendly and that’s a plus for most beginner players. I recommend waiting to splurge on intermediate or advanced discs once you’ve got the hang of this set and are ready to upgrade.
My original DX Leopard does have some good size nicks and dings! But it served its purpose well and I eventually upgraded to a Champion plastic Leopard and kept the original DX one as a backup. So once you master these discs you’ll be 100% ready to move on to some of the other top intermediate discs or splurge and upgrade to a more durable plastic.
There you have it!
