Most Expensive Disc Golf Disc (Updated 2023)

Ken Burkholder by Ken Burkholder
Reading Time: 5 mins read

The most expensive disc golf disc ever sold was a custom Discmania Sky God that sold at auction for $2,750. Simon Lizotte, a professional disc golfer sponsored by team Discmania, sold the discs to raise money for charity.

Discmania gifted the disc to Lizotte before he eventually sold it and gave the profits to charity. Specifically, the charities were Kids Disc Golf and UPlayDG. Lizotte said the disc was in perfect condition and had never been thrown. It featured a triple foil stamp and a rare dark blue/dark green color that made it unique. After Lizotte posted the listing on his Facebook group, the bidding quickly hit $500 before quickly reaching $1000. Eventually, the final bid landed at $2,750. Upon request, Lizotte signed the disc before sending it to the final buyer.

Other Expensive Disc Golf Discs

Although this is the most expensive disc golf disc on record, some seemingly “normal” discs can still bring in serious cash. Even though they may look normal to the untrained eye, they fall into one of the following categories.

1. Limited edition discs

Limited edition discs can be very valuable. They are viewed as collector items in the disc golf community – especially if they were used by a pro player or have some other significance. Discs with signatures of prominent disc golf players also fall under this category.

2. First run discs

First run discs are the first few hundred discs ever made from a new mold. Usually, this happens when a disc golf manufacturer releases a new disc design to the public. Think of them as the first edition books of the disc golf world. They are very scarce because not many of them exist.

First run discs will technically fly more consistently than discs made later on because mold will wear slightly over time. For most people, the difference is imperceptible, but some players swear by it.

3. Vintage or discontinued discs

Vintage or discontinued discs can be highly sought after by players who like the look and/or feel of them. Generally speaking, modern discs fly better than vintage discs, but some players prefer the look and feel of older discs. Some discontinued discs have a cult following in the disc golf community that increases their value beyond the original retail value.

Most Expensive Off-The-Shelf Discs

Ah yes, as we continue down this rabbit trail of expensive disc golf discs the question will inevitably arise – “What’s the most expensive disc I could buy off-the-shelf?”

That award goes to Vibram. Better for making shoes (which are also expensive), Vibram also makes some pretty sweet-looking (and expensive) discs. Their limited edition discs have a unique look and retail for $40/disc.

Are they worth the price? From my experience, Vibram discs have an excellent feel and are made of a really unique plastic that holds up very well over time. In fact, I found a Vibram Ibex midrange disc in a pond years ago and it’s one of the best discs I’ve ever owned! Even though this thing looks rough, it really has held up well Side note – I love the inset Vibram logo on these discs.

Other than some specialty disc manufacturers (like Vibram), disc golf disc prices are generally consistent across the industry. Kastaplast can be slightly more expensive than other brands, if only by a few dollars. However, most people consider Kastaplast discs to be some of the highest-quality discs in the game. So, you get what you pay for.

Final Thoughts

Most disc golf discs are worth no more than $20-$30, so you’ll have to go hunting If you want to spend some serious dough on a disc. Next time you’re at the course or the local disc golf shop, keep an eye out for unusual stamps, or unfamiliar brands. Maybe you’ll get lucky and find one like I did.
